Celebrities & Social Media: The Wizards Behind the Curtain
Last year Pop Superstar Alicia Keys posted a job offer on Monster.com seeking a “Super Woman Blogger…” Needless to say there was no dearth of applicants and the posting received worldwide attention– More on who landed the job at the end of this blog.
When it comes to brand management or online reputation management for celebrities there are two choices: DIY (do it yourself), or hire a wizard behind the curtain to be your brand ambassador. Will the real Slim Shady please stand up? Yes, Eminem has a Verified Twitter account.
Most of us are well aware how celebrities are effectively engaging with their fans and audience through social networking. Kim Kardashian, Lady GaGa, Britney Spears, Shaq, Kevin Smith (ThatKevinSmith), Kevin Pollak, Cher, … the list goes on.
In the social web, this sort of integration into the team of PR is tantamount.
We are continuously amazed at celebrities or high powered profiles that have left their brand unattended… who is minding the store? For example there are at least three Charlie Sheens on Twitter– none of them “Verified.” This causes and creates brand confusion with fans. In some cases the celebrities websites are not even legit.
When it comes to Online Reputation Management, we feel Social Media is the new “Magnum Force” (yes, there are also several Clint Eastwoods on Twitter and FB…none verified). We have found both Twitter, Facebook and YouTube extremely helpful when it comes to remedying the situations where someone else is impersonating and using an account. If you are working with a celebrity or a celebrity handling it yourself, they will resolve the issue.
Bottom line: TMZ and tabloids don’t stand a chance when it comes to a celebrity speaking directly to their fans. Like the great film producer Robert Evans said in The Kid Stays in the Picture, there are three sides to every story: yours… mine… and the truth. Celebrities are telling it like it is.
